11-a-side trials
Anticipation was high today as the 11-a-side trials began at Bridgewood High School. With six teams captained by those who had shown potential in the previous 5-a-side tournaments, the teachers had plenty of talent to choose from.
Two defenders who had already shown their capabilities in the previous tournament were Charlie Oakley and Ajit Kumble, who proved themselves again with some fantastic defending. Surprise talent of the day went to the keeper, Ryan Hartley, who made many fantastic saves. Another player not to have been seen before, Justin Cornard, showed remarkable agility by dribbling past three players, cutting in from the left flank and finishing by slotting a low ball past Jimmy Cork’s keeper.
Salam Chalabi and Dougie Butt were a good partnership, Chalabi proving himself to be a solid midfielder and Dougie Butt a strong striker.
Albinus Gardiner, who had a good game in the previous tournament showed that the skill he demonstrated before wasn’t a one-off. Catching the ball expertly on his chest, he smashed the ball into the net from thirty yards away.
Captain Sam Smith also had a tremendous match, along with teammates Aaron Jacobs, Christopher Coggins and Timothy Houghton-Smith.
Jack Mayhew had a fantastic game in the final of the 5-a-side tournament, and again proved himself in a midfield position. Angelo Paggio scored a dramatic penalty, and Ronnie Stenson secured himself a magnificant goal.
Post match comments:
Miss Cranson, manager of Green House said ‘These are good players. I’d say we’ve got twenty-five players here who would walk into most school teams.’
Mr Hyde, headteacher said ‘The talent here is exceptional. I am proud of my pupils, and it is going to be a hard decision choosing who we want to play against St Paul’s next Friday.’
