5-a-side tournament
Blue House ‘A’ snatched the Bridgewood High 5-a-side championship from Yellow House ‘A’ in the final moments of a tense game.It was a dream start for Albinus Gardiner and Dougie Butt, whose combined play in the first few minutes put Yellow House one goal up and in control. Blue House’s Jack Mayhew and Luan Havolli worked two give-and-go triangles before Havolli equalised by slotting a clever side-foot shot into the back of the net. With some encouragment at half time from managers Mr Grant and Mr Caudwell, both teams looked ready and determined for the next half. The second half kicked off to a dramatic start, with Blue House’s Dermott Riley expertly guiding the ball straight through the keeper’s legs, putting Blue House in the lead.Duc Duong of Yellow House retaliated by sprinting down the field, taking a return pass from Gardiner, and smashing the ball into the corner of the net.The goals kept on coming as Jack Mayhew, who had a tremendous game, took a roll-out from Dominic Jasinski and positioned the ball straight into Havolli’s path, who finished the goal neatly, putting Blue House in the lead once again. But Blue House’s manager, (Mr) Cauldwell was soon showing his frustrations on the sidelines as Dicky Woodward of Yellow House glided the ball past Blue defenders, and took a long shot at the net, where Charlie Oakley connected and scored. With three minutes to go, the ball was kicked from one end of the pitch to the other. Gardiner was denied a goal as Jasinski had a magnificent save, and Butt’s outstretched foot kept Riley’s shot out of the goal.Blue House’s Jack Mayhew secured Blue House a win in the closing stages of the match, as he dramatically tackled Duong, nutmegged Gardiner, and scored just before the final whistle.Headteacher, Mr Hyde said, ‘I think we have something special going on here. I feel like a panhandler who has struck gold. That final deserves to be called a classic.’
